A Peerless Carbon arc lamp was a work horse of yesterday cinema. Two Carbon rods burnt white hot separated by a small gap. This gap had to be maintained, otherwise the picture would turn blue if the carbons got to far apart. If the carbons got to close, the picture would turn brown. A feed motor was supposed to keep the carbons at the correct distance. You always had to keep an eye on them and manually adjust the rods via external control rods regularly |
